This spring in Idaho Falls the sun is shining, the snow has melted, and it’s beautiful outside! It almost makes you want to do sports. Sports are a perfect way to stay active and healthy this spring at Skyline High School. The sports currently going on this spring are track and field, baseball and softball, and tennis.
One of these spring sports is baseball. Baseball is a classic American sport invented in 1839 by a man named Abner Doubleday. In the game, a person hits a baseball with a bat and has to hit four plates. Points are earned by each person that crosses the home plate. The way one gets out is if they get three strikes or a fielder catches the ball. Jake Thomason is a baseball player for the Skyline High School baseball JV team. Jake has been playing this sport since a very young age because he found an interest in it. His favorite aspect of baseball is how organized it is and how smoothly it runs. Jake’s favorite memory from this sport is the time he ran a “triple base!” In his Freshman year, he hit the ball so hard that he was able to run all the way to third base. The baseball equipment will cost $500 at least (excluding the sports fees), but it is very much worth it! Jake says, “It’s my favorite sport, I’m always looking forward to the next season!” Jake would like to play baseball in college if he gets the opportunity.
Another great spring sport is Track and Field. Track and Field is a sport about running, throwing, and jumping. You earn team points by getting a relatively high placement during each Track meet. There are many events split into four categories, jumpers, sprinters, distance, and throwers. Porter Orchard runs the 800 for the Skyline High School Varsity Track team. Porter decided to try the sport because his dad’s whole side of the family liked running. He tried it in 6th grade and decided he was really good at it. Porter really enjoys the mental aspect of Track and loves the way his hard work pays off. Porter’s favorite memory from track is when he passed a Madison kid in a meet at Rigby High School, putting him in second place. From this win, he got to stand on the second-place podium. Track costs around $50-$150, depending on what kind of shoes you buy. Porter is hoping to run this sport even through college and then see where that takes him.
The final spring sport is tennis. Tennis is a sport in which you hit a ball with a racket and try to get it to the other side without overshooting or hitting the net. You earn points when the other team hits the ball out or doesn’t hit it before it bounces twice on their side of the court. After winning four points, you win the game. The first person to win six games wins the match. You mainly need to buy a tennis racket, the standard tennis racket costs around $25 making the final cost for tennis to be relatively cheap.
All these sports are great ways to get out of the house next spring and to stay in shape. They are all great sports and I would highly recommend trying them out and doing your own research on them as well. Remember to have fun!
