Why, why, Whydaho?!?! Idaho weather is crazy! This school year of 2023-2024, the city of Idaho Falls has had some very strange weather. Near the end of February, Idaho Falls was hitting a high of 54 degrees Fahrenheit, while at the beginning of March, they were only hitting a high of 44 degrees. After what was supposed to be one of the “coldest months of the year,” it started to get colder in March (the beginning of spring). That is just the recent weather, not to mention every other year they’ve been experiencing crazy weather. The real question is, why does this happen?

Although many people live in Idaho Falls, this kind of weather occurs all over Idaho. The main causes for Idaho’s unpredictable weather are the mountains/foothills and positioning. Idaho being farther from the equator means that they will naturally have snow and colder weather, but the mountains are what causes the weather to be unpredictable. The mountains act as a barrier trapping wind, temperature, and precipitation causing the weather to be very unpredictable. This causes the conditions to be severe and sometimes dangerous.

How does one stay safe in these conditions? First, determine weather you’re safe or not. The best way to stay safe is by being prepared for any weather. To stay safe in the snow you should be more cautious while driving and take it a bit slower. Always have emergency blankets, kitty litter/ice melt, a flashlight, extra fuel, and a spare tire in case your car breaks down or gets stuck in any conditions. Have extra water, food, warm clothing, a warm blanket, and a backup generator in your house in case of an emergency.
