According to law enforcement, police were called to Econo Lodge on Broadway after getting a report of a couple staying past their checkout date. At the time of the report police were “unavailable due to other higher- priority calls” officers showed up around 3 p.m. and identified the man as Robert Flores Jr. After past calls about Flores officers “took extra precautions like bringing a ballistic shield to the room.” After making themselves aware to Flores by knocking, and speaking to him by name there was no response.
When entering the room to go get Flores, Flores started shooting at Idaho Falls officers. “Three Idaho Falls police officers were trapped inside the hotel room, unable to get to safety past the bathroom and into the hallway,” according to the release of IFPD. No officers were shot, but according to one officer he reported that he thought Flores was hit but “could hear him moving and making other noises.” Such as him talking to himself like there was another person in the room. The Idaho Falls police department SWAT team was activated.
The three officers were removed through a safe window. As the SWAT team takes care of Flores. The SWAT team “utilized a variety of methods to attempt to get a safe visual inside the hotel room to communicate with Flores.” Eventually, the SWAT team used flashbang grenades, entered the room and took Flores into custody. The hand gun was found in the bathroom. After a nine- day hospital stay, Flores was booked into Bonneville county jail and is scheduled for a hearing on May 1st. As of now Flores is being charged with six counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement, unlawful possession of a firearm, a misdemeanor resisting or obstructing officers, a misdemeanor for trespassing, and six felony enhancements for the use of a deadly weapon. No officers were harmed by Flores, Flores was shot by one of the three officers that were stuck in the hotel room. Body Cams have been released from the shootout.
