During the months of winter, the students and faculty members of Skyline, among other schools in District 91 wish that we could get more days off due to the snow and other dangerous weather conditions. Compared to other districts around Idaho Falls, D91 gets way less snow days due to the weather. The members of the district are usually outraged whenever they have to go to school or work in a blizzard with over 3 inches of snow on the ground.
A few people around Skyline have something to say about this issue. One person who has an opinion on this is Taylor Cherry. Taylor is a freshman and an ex-student of the newspaper class. Taylor says “We shouldn’t get more snow days because then we would just get more days at the end of the year. Then it’s like we didn’t even have those days off.” I also asked if the snow days we get rarely should be fair across all of the districts. She said, “Yes they should, because it isn’t fair that we have to go to school when others don’t.”
The answers that the people gave were very valid and many agree with them. Another interviewee was Jenna Goldman. Jenna is a freshman, and I asked her the same questions and she gave similar answers on the first two. I asked if the administrators should care more about the students and faculty than they do about the amount of days we are in school. She responded with, “Yes of course they should. If the temperatures outside are like dangerously low then we shouldn’t have to go in. Also if the roads are bad then that’s also not okay as well.”
One of the main reasons why Skyline doesn’t get many snow days is because we need a certain amount of hours of “seat time”, the amount of time we are in school. If we get days off due to the weather, then we won’t meet our “seat time” requirement and we will need extra days added onto the end of the year.
