Over 100 Dolphins have died this September due to Amazon water reaching more than 102 Degrees Fahrenheit. The Amazon River is in its dry season and a lot of other species of animals are being affected by this high temperature. The floating corpses of these mammals were found over the past seven days, with the water reaching up to 120 Degrees Fahrenheit after a long period of drought. These extreme temperatures caused a lot of dolphins to die.
Dolphins are not the only major animals dying due to this temperature change, fish are at high risk too. Researchers are not sure if the drought is the cause of this tragedy yet however, “It is still early to determine the cause of this ‘extreme event’ but the deaths are likely to be linked to the drought period and high temperatures.” A research facility in Brazil told CNN. Researchers have been trying to save the dolphins by transferring them to lagoons and ponds as the water is much cooler there. However, transferring these dolphins isn’t exactly safe either because they are forced to check if there aren’t any viruses or toxins before releasing the animals into the wild.
The Amazon is one of the world’s biggest rivers but it has already dried up to 7.4 meters. There is an ever-increasing chance that there is going to be even more droughts and deaths. The after-effects will affect the economy and other industries as well.
