This Saturday a huge earthquake hit Afghanistan and destroyed more than a thousand homes. The earthquake also killed at least 2,000 people but they aren’t fully sure because they are still trying to find more people under all the crushed buildings. The government said that Sunday had hundreds of people still trapped”. Everyone who survived was all over the place because some people were frozen and didn’t speak or they were crying and screaming. This earthquake had a magnitude of 6.3 and hit a densely populated area near Herat.
It was said that Afghanistan’s earthquake had powerful aftershocks. Another government speaker also said,” provided the toll that, if confirmed, would make it one of the deadliest earthquakes to strike the country in two decades”. The reason why the speaker was saying this is because in June of 2022, another earthquake struck the mountain region and wiped out stone and mud-brick homes killing over 1,000 people. Afghanistan still hasn’t gotten a global response but almost 36 hours after the first earthquake hit there hasn’t been any planes of aid flying in. The aid agencies and nongovernmental groups had appealed to the international community, but a handful of countries publicly offered support.
The International Rescue did warn that the lack of rescue equipment could also push the death toll in Western Afghanistan. This means most people who are still alive but are trapped cannot be saved on Saturday and can not get any treatment either. Another problem is that the Temperature drops by 10 degrees at night. But there are still thousands of people dead or alive buried under all the crushed buildings.
Dozens of teams have been busy trying to help people recover, even the military. The United Nations “ deployed four ambulances with doctors and some support counselors to the regional hospital”. Doctors had set up five medical tents to be able to hold 80 patients. Sunday was getting somewhat better as more equipment came but by the time they came, the children were already dying because of the lack of food. They still think there are more people under all the crushed concrete. But we’ll never know how many people are still alive waiting to be saved.
