The best thing to do if there are bad roads is to just stay home. Although, if it is necessary, then here’s some tips on driving safely. Bad weather can be frightening and dangerous for those who travel a lot. More than 2,000 road deaths, according to research by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, have happened every winter from storms, bad weather, and slushy roads. Every driver should know the rules when dealing with winter road emergencies. There are many different rules for driving in the cold, especially if it is snowing.

For driving in the cold, you need to keep multiple things in mind. It is important to keep cold weather gear in your car, such as extra food and water, warm clothing, flashlights, a glass scraper, blankets, medication, and any other things you think will be necessary. Also make sure your tires are properly inflated and have plenty of tread, winter tires are preferable. Keep at least half a tank of fuel in your vehicle at all times. Never start your car to warm it up in an enclosed area, such as a garage. Do not use cruise control when driving on slippery surfaces like ice or snow.

Driving on the snow is a little bit different and more dangerous than driving in simply cold weather. The most important rule is to stay home if the weather is really bad and only go out if absolutely necessary. Even if you know you drive well in bad weather, it’s better to avoid going out. Always adjust your speed and take note that you are driving on the snow. Accelerate slowly to regain traction and avoid skids. Don’t move in a hurry and take time to slow down for stops. Always remember it takes longer to slow down on icy roads and your following distance should increase to five or six seconds. This helps to provide the longer distance needed if you have to stop. If you can slow down enough to keep rolling until a traffic light changes, do it. This will help you to start to go again. Every driver should know all these things and do these things on the road. Always stay safe out there in the snow.
