Motocross racing increases in popularity

Several Skyline students have been drawn to motocross by the need for speed.

Jaun Caudillo (10), for example, has been racing for  years. “Motocross is an important part of me, and I love to race the track.” He acknowledged that motocross can be dangerous, but he just loves the races so much that it is worth the risk. Like any sport, it takes a lot of practice to be good, but he has “a lot of fun doing it.”

Racing, as a sport, has existed for ages, but racing on a dirt bike requires a whole new arena. In motocross there is a track that is half a mile to two miles long with jumps turns and  straightaways. This track really tests skills and abilities of the drivers, who engage in a degree of risk as they mount their machines to race, either indoors or out.

Karson Miles (10) has been racing since he could walk.  practices every weekend at Noise Park to become better and better. He has traveled as far as Las Vegas, Nevada, to race and compete. How dedicated is he? “In the future I hope to go pro. I love dirt biking.” Safety is a very big concern for me, so I can be safe while riding. Sponsor?

That are several different types of motocross, including enduro, racing over obstacles, moto race to win, arena race hard and have fun, trials race fast , and supercross race to be the champion of supercross. The differences are fairly minor, except for the track. Moto has a wider track, and super is about 14ft in width. Supercross events are held in giant stadiums, while motocross is outside.

Drake Olvenson (?) compete in endurocross specifically. Each race is about an hour to two hours, so it requires a lot of stamina. He races at Noise Park is off of Arco Hwy for most of his races, and during his race he endures jumps huge berms and hills to jump over and straight aways.

When Bryson Rhodes (11) stopped playing sports, he started riding with friends. He usually rides 2-3 times a month. Sometimes, he has to miss school in order to compete, and so far, the furthest he has traveled for motocross and things related to motocross is St George. His goal? “I want to win a race.” He loves how physical and social the sport is. He prepares himself by riding with friends and going to the gym. His biggest concern about racing is his safety.
