A Look at Across the Spider-Verse Part One
Into the Spider-Verse shocked superhero fans and non-fans alike with its unique award-winning animation style and spider-themed superheroes that had never had a chance to make it onto the big screen. Released December 1st, 2018, the movie quickly gained popularity, especially on the internet, and ultimately became the biggest animated movie of the year. Even without the setup for a sequel at the end of the first movie, with its success, it was practically guaranteed one. It wasn’t until November of 2019 that the sequel film was officially announced. Then the title was revealed far later in December of 2021 along with the official trailer being released. The sequel: Across the Spider-Verse is planned to be released early October of 2022. Despite the trailer being released only semi-recently, people have already tried searching it for as much information as possible and started imagining all the possibilities of what the world of the spider-verse could expand into.
In the trailer for Across the Spider-Verse, it opens with a flickering text box that says “Meanwhile in another universe…” then switches to a scene of Miles Morales laying on his bed listening to music in his own universe, Earth-1610. As the music fades out, you can hear someone calling his name before he opens his eyes and sees Gwen (another spider superhero) standing in front of a portal in his bedroom. She asks if he has a second before dragging him out of his room. The scene cuts to Miles, alone, falling through a tube made of red hexagonal rings, which can be assumed to be a portal to another dimension. Suddenly, he falls from the sky into the street of a new dimension, only to almost instantly be slammed into by a man wearing a Spiderman-esque suit (this man being Miguel O’Hara from Earth-928). As Miguel grips onto Miles, the camera zooms in on his wrist, where he’s wearing a device that resembles somewhere between a bomb and a watch. He clicks a button on it before he and Miles fall into another portal leading to a futuristic-looking highway. Then the screen goes black, showing Mile’s symbol before switching to the title of the movie. That’s where the trailer ends.
So what does any of this mean? What do people think will happen in the movie? It isn’t completely clear, but there are some key details in the trailer that could explain a little bit of what the new movie will have in it. First of all, when the text box that opens the trailer appears, it doesn’t just flicker, but it flickers into a couple of different languages, which most likely represents some of the Spidermen that’ll be introduced in Across the Spider-Verse Part One. When Gwen appears, it’s clear that some time has passed between this movie and the previous Into the Spider-Verse movie. Miles looks older and Gwen’s hair is grown out a bit and dyed pink at the ends. With a closer look at Gwen, it can be noticed that she’s wearing a wristband that’s very similar to the one Miguel used at the end of the previous movie to make a jump through the multiverse. When Miles travels into the other dimension it can be seen that he is using a device such as the ones Miguel and Gwen had on their wrists. The travel between the dimensions can clearly be seen to be more structural than how the characters traveled between dimensions in the first movie. This gives the characters in the new movie the power to freely travel between dimensions, most likely with accuracy. On one of the buildings Miles falls past when he falls into the other dimension, it says “Mumbattan”. Also in this new universe, all the action text that appears on the screen is written in Hindi, one of the languages the intro text box glitched into. This means Miles Morales fell into the home-Earth of Pavitr Prabhakar (a Spiderman that resides in India), Earth-50101. When Miguel grabs Miles and types something into his wristband, it’s actually the number 928. Which, as a reminder, is the number for the Earth that Miguel himself comes from. The Earth they crash into next has text in Spanish, another one of the languages the opening text glitches into. Several other characters have already been confirmed to be in the movie including Silk and Spider-Woman.
Despite not much of the plot itself being revealed through the trailer, with this movie being a part one, it will most likely be a pretty large, thrilling, and complex plot. Along with that, it’ll have a ton of spider superheroes (most likely both the ones introduced in the initial 2018 film and the new film) that, it can be assumed, will probably have to team up to save the world. Which begs the question: what could possibly be so large of a problem that those two elements need to be combined? This movie could possibly end in a battle larger than Marvel’s Infinity War and Endgame combined.
In the end, the trailer reveals so much, yet so little. The movie will include Pavitr Prabhakar, Gwen, Miguel O’Hara, Silk, and so many others. They will have a way to travel freely between dimensions. But ultimately, what does that all mean? With endless bounds and endless dimensions, there are endless possibilities of where this story could lead and what problems the heroes will face. It will only truly be known when Across the Spider-Verse Part One is released: December 7, 2022.
