Netflix Movie of The Month
It’s not James Bond; it’s Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. The Netflix Movie this month that I have chosen is 2010’s The Tourist.
The movie follows Johnny Depp as Frank Tupelo, a math teacher from Wisconsin on ‘vacation’ from Paris to Venice when Elise, (Angelina Jolie) a beautiful British woman full of mystery and excitement, seemingly drops into his life. After the separation of his wife, he becomes transfixed on her.
The two main characters end up in Venice, Italy, and after a seemingly innocent kiss, his life proceeds to go downhill as he is caught in a game of cat and mouse between a ruthless gangster named Reginald Shaw and Italian, French and British Interpol (International Police) agents like Paul Bettany, that guy who plays Vision from The Avengers movies. After he realizes that they all believe he is Elise’s husband Alexander Pearce, who has disappeared and underwent plastic surgery to alter his appearance, he steals, embezzles and launders millions of dollars of money while being chased by agents for £744 million in backed taxes and Reginald whom Alexander stole $2.3 billion from and now has resurfaced, writing to Elise to try and reunite with her.
Now Frank faces a rather large problem: he has a mobster and Interpol after him thinking he is Alexander Pearce, the newfound mystery woman of his dreams is still in love partly with Alexander and finally Frank has absolutely no idea what to do. He does know one thing: he loves Elise and that he is willing to do anything to ensure her safety, and after Elise gets cornered by Reginald and his goons and is forced to try and open a safe containing the stolen money, it becomes clear that she doesn’t know the combination and Interpol has snipers waiting and watching. However, the lead Interpol investigator (Paul Bettany) is willing to risk her life just so Alexander will reveal his new face.
Frank isn’t having it. He is ready to don a British accent and go in saying he really is Alexander Pearce and that he will open the safe if they let Elise go. Reginald doesn’t believe him at first, but this is really where the climax of the movie hits as the situation does not go according to plan.
This is an action-packed romance that I highly recommend you watch. It isn’t too boringly romantic for guy’s and isn’t constantly gun fights and explosions to make any girl cringe. Clocking in at 1 hour and 43 minutes and containing a very talented cast, the best is it doesn’t end the way you think it will…so give it a watch and pay close attention to details.
