TikTok takes over

What exactly is this app?

Millions and millions each day, more and more people are joining this app TikTok. Many compare it to the old and very much missed app Vine. Tik Tok is a platform where those from anywhere in the world can upload videos of them singing, lip syncing, dancing and doing challenges. The Tik Tok craze is huge this year, and most expect it to get bigger and bigger as the years go on.

In 2019, TikTok has flourished and trends have been becoming lifestyles for a few. Some of those trends include VSCO girls, which are based off an editing app and considered by some to be a “lifestyle.” A VSCO girl is what we consider the basic white girl of 2019, the Hydro Flask, scrunchies, puka shell necklace and constantly saying the phrases “and I oop” or “sksksksksk.” At this point people consider it as a “pandemic.”

Next, we have the E-boys/ E-girls, people who are considered “edgy” or “relatable.” The fashion consists of grunge shirts, lock chains, Vans, thick belts, black fingernails and black hair. E-girls and E-boys is still a major trend that people seem to not mind as much and is definitely the most “normal” out of the fashion trends.

TikTok does not just consist of grunge boys who look into the camera and get millions of likes or girls who wear scrunchies and crocs for clout, but also consists of dance challenges, such as the “Obsessed” challenge, which is when users dance to the song “Obsessed” by Mariah Carrey and doing a certain dance.

There are also easier dances such as the “Woah” challenge and “Slowmo” challenges, but you can never forget about the more difficult challenges like the “Git Up,” where users dance to Blanco Brown’s “The Git Up” and almost always end up either viral or on the For You Page.

I went around and interviewed fellow classmates and students at Skyline and asked them a few questions, and these are their responses. “What is your least favorite trend on TikTok?” “Well, I’d have to say the E-Boy tap. It weirds me out and they look stupid,” Rachel Lee (9) said.  “What is your opinion on Tik Tokers?” “They’re pretty cool, and I think they are pretty funny, except sometimes they get annoying,” Jasmin Camacho (9) said.

Everyone has different opinions on TikTok, but all in all, I think we can all agree TikTok is one of the most addicting apps ever.
