Californians are moving in droves to Idaho. This trend has been developing over the last 50 years, but it has gotten more severe over the last year. In 2016, there were 80,011 immigrants who moved to Idaho; 17,000 of them were Californians, more than any other state.

Some Idahoans do not accept these new migrants, some of whom are liberal democrats. Jeremiah Fielding (12), said “Liberal democrats have their own state.”  Meanwhile, others do welcome them with open arms.  I, being a recent Californian who has moved here, feel welcomed, but the culture here is very different than that of California.  When asked about the culture, Perla Juarez (10), who moved here from San Bernardino, CA said, “It’s a little more  calmer.” She even went as far as to say that there is less “traffic,” “homelessness,” and there are “more friendly people.”

The traffic is less severe than in California. But now, Idaho’s traffic is on the rise. Daisy Moreno, a member of our community, said this regarding the traffic: “Yeah, ever since I arrived here from California, it got worse in 5 years.”

But, Californians have come here to escape their former states problems as well. I know many of the problems I encountered in California like the smell of urine in the dirty streets, and the pollution, aren’t big problems here. These problems that Idahoans believe that we are causing here are not entirely our fault. We are still trying to get accustomed to your culture. Most Californians do not understand Idaho’s obsession with potatoes and gun rights.

Regardless of what one must think about Californians coming to Idaho, it is happening. Californians are bringing their culture and we are interacting with yours. I am not going to stop having Californian traits, some people are going to stop and assimilate. All we can do is co-exist.
